HOT
AIR BALLOONING IN SOUTH AFRICA
A hot air balloon trip is possibly one of the
best ways to appreciate the vast and spectacular landscapes
of South Africa. The different regions offer breathtaking
panoramas of mountains, oceans, savannah, deserts, winelands
or forests
A hot air balloon tour usually begins at dawn affording the
most magnificent views of an African sunrise and takes about
4 hours. The actual hot air balloon flight will last approximately
an hour and most hot air ballooning companies will end with
a champagne breakfast once you’re back on terra firma.
Due to the popularity of hot air ballooning in South Africa,
it is highly recommended to book at least 2 weeks in advance.
Ballooning is weather dependant and most bookings will only
be confirmed a few days ahead. It is a tranquil experience
that requires no skills or physical fitness.
In Mpumalanga, ideal weather
makes hot air ballooning a year round activity whilst in Kwa
Zulu Natal high winds mean that hot air balloon trips only
operate from November to May.
Prime destinations for hot
air ballooning are the Cape Winelands, Oudtshoorn in the Karoo
semi-desert, the Drakensberg Mountains in Kwa Zulu Natal,
Sabie and Hazyview in Mpumalanga and the Magaliesberg Mountains
near Johannesburg.
Whilst hot air ballooning
in South Africa is not cheap, it is a memorable and magical
experience and well worth the cost.
